Wednesday Ways To Save: Homemade Aromatic Fire Starters!

Good morning, savvy savers! For this weeks Wednesday Ways To Save, I wanted to show you one of my favorite tips for saving money around the house! Homemade firepit fire starters! I reason I came up with this tip was that I own two fire pits for my backyard and patio, and needed an economic way to start both during chilly night or when company way over, and voila! I came up with an awesome, quick way to do so!

First, I must say I use pine cones, basic pine cones, well sort of. Yes, I know you can gather pine cones in your yard, the park, or from family and neighbors, but for me I purchase the bags of pine cones that have been infused with cinnamon and clove oil sold around Christmas at most craft stores, and after the holidays I often find them for a song at my Walmart and JoAnn Fabrics each year for this project. This past holiday season, I was able to buy 30 bags for $0.19 a bag, and each bag contained 23-26 pine cones.

Once I have my pine cones, I set them on newspaper. I then use a basic plug-in candle warmer (nothing premium as say, Scentsy); the type that also could warm coffee cups tableside. Once my wax is warmed and fluid, I drizzle my pinecones with wax. While the wax is still warm, I sprinkle my pine cones with dried herbs from my garden; sage, basil, peppermint, or whatever I have on hand, leftover my from patio herb garden each Summer. Here’s the tricky part, you must wrap the pull the newspaper up, and wrap the pinecone quickly, so that the wax will dry to the paper and the cones making small fire starting bundles! At this point, I tie each bundle with twine and store in a dry place!

So, there you have it! Homemade aromatic fire starters! I make my version for around $0.05 each, and similar versions, sold in designer catalogues sell for around $8.00 for 4!

Enjoy!
